About: Development
Skygoat was first built as a Unity3D learning project. It was envisioned as a 3D-runner that used button controls instead of swipe gestures and gyroscope controls. Since development began, it's changed numerous times. In fact, the only thing that remains is the genre, the control scheme, and the name (which was originally just a codename!).
Skygoat was built by one programmer, from scratch, using only some Creative Commons or similarly licensed assets (music, fur textures, etc.).
The codebase is just as messy as you would expect from a first project in a new engine. For every Unity3D concept, you have three phases of use:
- Not used when it should be. (Early in development)
- Used when it shouldn't be. (Just learned about [concept])
- Used properly. (Got burned by an improperly used [concept])
The game isn't optimized beyond the basics (object pooling, some algorithm optimizations) so an older phone may have difficulties running it. The Nexus 4 used as a test platform gets 50fps on average. If you're playing it on a different phone, I'd love to hear about any bugs or slowdown!
Post-release analysis coming soon!
